Within the BONEBANK project, an innovative value chain for clinical harvesting and use of mesenchymal stem cells during routine fracture surgeries will be developed and implemented.

Project in a nutshell

01.09.2015 - 31.08.2020

BONEBANK is supported by Interreg Deutschland-Danmark with funds from the European Regional Development Fund. Find out more about Interreg Deutschland-Danmark at

What is the procedure so far?

Material from surgeries like bone marrow, blood and stem cells is discarded.

What is happening in BONEBANK?

Mesenchymal stem cells are isolated from the harvested material and stored in a cross-border biobank. These cells offer a high-quality resource for the patients themselves, other patients and research facilities in universities and industry.

Goals and activities

Implementation of a German-Danish biobank for bone marrow stem cells through:

  • Development of harvesting techniques of stem cells through fracture treatment in routine surgeries
  • Development and operation of a cross-border biobank
  • Development of an organisation and exploitation model of the German-Danish biobank

Contribution to the programme goals

  • Product innovation: harvesting device for bone marrow stem cells
  • Process innovation: new resource of mesenchym
  • New products and services: organisation and exploitation model of a biobank

Target groups

  • Hospitals and trauma centres
  • Life Science Industry (Medtech, Biotech, Pharma)
  • Research infrastructures
  • Politicians and the general public

Project and netzworkpartners

  • Life Science Nord Management GmbH
  • Næstved Hospital Department of Clinical Immunology
  • Odense University Hospital
  • soventec GmbH
  • Stryker Trauma GmbH
  • University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck Laboratory for Biomechanics and Orthopaedic Traumatological Research, Department for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery
  • University of Lübeck Interdisciplinary Center for Biobanking-Lübeck (ICB-L) & Section for Translational Surgical Oncology and Biobanking (Department of Surgery)
  • Health Innovation Centre of Southern Denmark
  • Lübeck Chamber of Commerce and Industry

BONEBANK aims at following options of usage of bone marrow stem cells and project results:

  • Autologous usage
  • Donation (allogenic usage)
  • Storage of mesenchymal stem cells for future use
  • Scientific research purposes
  • Support of innovations in the programme region and promotion of growth and employment

Cross-Border collaboration

BONEBANK combines existing expertise of the German and Danish project partners in the fields of stem cell research, medical technology, trauma centres and biobank operators on both sides of the border. This leads to a unique value chain within the region, from innovative harvesting of bone marrow stem cells, via storage in a cross-border biobank to usage in regional research facilities and companies. The project forms an important innovation platform for the development of new medical products and therapies for regenerative medicine. Furthermore, it contributes to the improvement of research and development expenses in the programme region.
